Student nurse saves man after he becomes unresponsive at the wheel of a car: ‘Life-saving actions’

Christmas miracle: Demi Murphy was returning after lunch when she saw a man who was unresponsive in his car

After a man stopped breathing while driving a car, a student nurse swung into action and allegedly saved his life.

Demi Murphy is a three-year student nurse at Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool, England. She was driving back to work after lunch when she saw a man's car parked in the middle of the road.

She told the BBC that she ran to the car and saw that the man, identified as John McCain, was not breathing and unresponsive.

A family donated four kidneys to save a New York man's life.

"I didn't have time to think about it. I just got in the car and started doing CPR while he was in the driver's seat," she recalled.

Her friend, who was on the phone with her, called an ambulance, she said.

At the same time, McCain's partner, Vicki Flattery, called the driver's phone and Murphy answered.

That's when she learned McCain's father had a genetic heart disease, the BBC reports.

"Thankfully the ambulance arrived very quickly and they got him out of the car and while John was on the floor I continued CPR while the paramedics got the defibrillator," he said.

After regaining a pulse, McCain was put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

The 37-year-old was later found to have suffered ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest. According to the BBC, he was placed on life support in intensive care.

He added, "We are really grateful that Demi was in the right place at the right time and all the other paramedics and hospital teams worked to save John, so he could come home to his children and his family."

David Melia, chief nursing officer at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, told the BBC that Murphy "should be incredibly proud of herself."

"His quick thinking and life-saving actions mean John is here to enjoy Christmas with his family this year," he said.

Melia said she had "no doubt that Demi has a long and successful career ahead of her."
