Tourists dies after falling from cliff while hiking with husband at New York State park

Police say the couple were hiking on the Beacon Hill Trail when they stopped to take photos at the edge of a cliff.

A Singapore tourist tragically died after falling off a cliff in a New York state park while hiking with her husband last week.

New York State Police troopers were dispatched to Minnewaska State Park in downtown Rochester just after 1 p.m. on December 22, for a report of an injured passenger.

Investigators identified the woman as Noor Ayyah Binte MD Akbar, 39, of Singapore. She and her husband, Abdul Rauf bin Mohammed Saeed, 41, were hiking on the Beacon Hill Trail when they stopped to take photos at the edge of the cliff.

State police said Blinte MD Akbar lost her footing and fell about 70 feet down the cliff. Her husband called 911.

NYSP Aviation responded to the scene and evacuated the woman to safety. Bin Mohammed said medical staff tried to revive him for about three hours but were unsuccessful. He was taken to Ellenville Regional Hospital where he died, state police said.

"My heart is broken into pieces and I don't know how to put them back together," Bin Mohammed said in a Facebook post.

The incident remains under investigation.

  1. Are we sure that she wasn't "launched" from that spot? If you have ever been stuck in a car; with an Asian, middle aged female; you can understand my suspicions about the chain of evens.
