Biden to double down on Jan 6 attacks on Trump as 'Bidenomics' message deflates

President Biden will call former President Trump a threat to democracy on Friday

President Biden's campaign is doubling down on January 6-related attacks against former President Trump in the coming weeks after the White House's "Bidennomics" message performed poorly.

Biden will launch a new wave of attacks on Trump on Friday, calling him a threat to democracy during a speech in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. According to Axios, senior campaign officials highlighted the location's connection with George Washington and Trump's efforts to cling to power, which contradicts Washington's desire to step down from office.

Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez told NBC News, "Over the last three years, MAGA Republicans haven't moved away from the big lie — they've doubled down."

Biden has delivered speeches on the January 6 anniversary in both 2022 and 2023, but he avoided mentioning Trump both times. He is expected to take a different stance on Friday.

Biden's campaign is mirroring the pivot with a new ad focused on Trump and January 6.

"Right now we're all being asked: What will we do to preserve our democracy?" Biden says in the ad. "History is watching. The world is watching. And most importantly, our children and grandchildren will hold us accountable."

"This ad serves as a stark reminder that this election may well determine the fate of American democracy," Rodriguez told reporters.

The change in messaging comes after the White House's "Bidenomics" campaign resonated with voters amid still-rising inflation.

After criticism from within his own party, Biden stopped using the term in speeches by the end of November.

An anonymous Democratic strategist told NBC at the time, "Whoever came up with the Bidennomics slogan should be fired." “This is probably the worst message you could ever imagine.”

Meanwhile, Trump's campaign is heading into the Republican primaries, which is gaining momentum largely due to the criminal cases against him and recent state decisions to remove him from primary ballots.
