3 Washington, DC police officers shot by suspect in ongoing barricade situation, officials say

Washington DC. The Metropolitan Police Department in the U.S. says three of its officers were shot by a suspect who was confined inside a home on Wednesday.

According to Fox5 DC, Police Chief Pamela Smith said officers arrived to serve an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals at a residence in the 5000 block of Hanna Place around 7:30 a.m. when they attempted to enter. He was shot with bullets.

Smith reportedly said the suspect was restrained inside the property and "fire continued from this location" in the southeast part of the city.

"Three officers suffered gunshot wounds that appear to be non-life-threatening. All three were taken to an area hospital for treatment," a police spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

"A fourth officer was also taken to an area hospital for minor injuries. This officer was not injured by the gunfire," the spokesperson said.

Several roads around the shooting site are now closed due to law enforcement response to the incident. School officials say that three nearby primary schools are also running on alert status.

"This remains an active scene and for your safety, we ask that you avoid the area," the Metropolitan Police Department said in a post on Twitter.
