Democrat Barbara Lee Demands $50 Minimum Wage: ‘Just Do The Math! Just Do The Math!’

Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA), running for one of California's U.S. Senate seats, said during a debate this week that raising the minimum wage to $50 an hour makes sense.

Lee, whose proposal would mean minimum wage workers would make more than $100,000 a year, made the comments onstage Monday night against Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), Katie Porter (D-CA) and Republican Steve Garvey. ,

Both Schiff and Porter have called for raising the minimum wage to at least $20 an hour, while Garvey has come out right against raising the minimum wage.

"In the Bay Area, I believe it was the United Way that recently came out with a report that $127,000 is barely enough for a family of four," Lee said. “Another recent survey: $104,000. “For a one-person family, the low income is barely enough to sustain because of the affordability crisis.”

“Just do the math! Just do the math! He continued. “We certainly have a national minimum wage that we need to raise to make a living,” he said. “You're talking about $20, $25, OK, but when we calculate this wage I have to focus on what California needs and what the affordability factor is.”
