Fight breaks out aboard Southwest flight as witness praises bystander's ‘conflict resolution'

A video shows two airplane passengers having a heated argument during a flight - an argument that then turned into a physical fight.

A passenger named Matthew Kivlan was taking a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Hawaii on Monday, Feb. 12, when he witnessed a scuffle between two other passengers, as Storyful and others reported.

Kivlan took out his phone and started filming the confrontation between the two male passengers.

As seen in the video, one passenger appeared to be arguing with another passenger before being punched.

The passenger sitting across the aisle can be seen punching another man several times, before bystanders and flight attendants came in, pulled him back and separated the people.

Kivlan stated that in his view, the bystander used "textbook conflict resolution" techniques to defuse the situation by "maintaining eye contact, using non-threatening body language, and tactical empathy.

A Southwest Airlines employee told NBC that the two people involved in the altercation were taken into custody upon arrival in Hawaii.

The charges are unknown at this time, Storyful reports.

Kivlan told Storyful that although the situation appears to be an escalation of a dispute, he does not judge the individuals involved.

He said the situation "had given rise to understandable conflicts with decisions I'm sure both of them regret."

Kivlan instead recommended that people "focus on the lessons learned."
