House Republicans heap praise on Taiwan's new leader in direct jab at China

House Republicans are giving a formal show of support for Taiwan's president-elect on Thursday, which is likely to anger Beijing's ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

In a letter sent to President-elect Lai Ching-te and signed by six GOP lawmakers, they vowed to help the island withstand Chinese "pressure" and blame Beijing for continuing its aggressive campaign against its neighbors in Southeast Asia. Was accused.

The US lawmakers wrote, "We want to extend our heartfelt congratulations on your recent victory in Taiwan's presidential election. Once again, the people of Taiwan have demonstrated the strength of your country's strong democratic system in a region where these values have always been are not shared."

"Strengthening US-Taiwan relations is one of our top priorities, especially in the face of China's growing aggression."

The letter was led by Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas.

Lai's election by Taiwanese voters was not unexpected, but it is nonetheless a condemnation of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his goal of "reunification" between the two regions.

Taiwan's independence has also been a flashpoint in strained relations between the US and China, particularly over the island's booming semiconductor industry.

Semiconductors are critical components in a range of electronic devices from smartphones to satellites and bank ATMs.

"We look forward to working with you and your administration to advance our partnership and assist Taiwan in shielding it from Beijing's massive diplomatic, economic and military pressure," the US lawmakers wrote to Lai on Thursday.

He also congratulated newly elected Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, who previously served as Taiwan's top envoy to the US.

"Through your joint leadership, we are confident that the Democratic Progressive Party will usher in the next phase for Taiwan's sovereignty and democracy. We welcome a new chapter in U.S.-Taiwan relations and look forward to pursuing stability and development in India." Look forward to collaborating with you for the Pacific region,” the letter concluded.

Lai favors maintaining Taiwan's strong ties with the United States. However, there are no formal diplomatic relations due to the US's "One China" policy, which recognizes only the government of Beijing.
