Northeast, Midwest to see sunny weekend after week of relentless gloom

There have been sunny days in many cities, where skies remained cloudy for much of the past week and January.

This may be a matter of relief for many Americans, who remained immersed in a blanket of darkness and gloom in the first month of 2024.

Fox Forecast Center selected a few cities to show how cloudy, partly cloudy and mostly cloudy their January has been.

Topping the list is Buffalo, which has seen cloudy skies for 31 days. That means every day of January remained cloudy in the city.

The city has 80 to 100% cloud cover. In fact, 22 of those days were 100% cloudy.

Next is Cleveland, where there will be 26 cloudy days in January. Cleveland has also been almost 100% cloudy since January 23.

Another Midwestern city, Detroit, also had 100% cloud cover during the same time. There were 24 cloudy days in the Motor City in January.

For comparison, Seattle, known for clouds and gloomy skies, had slightly less cloudiness at 93.3% and 26 cloudy days.

In fact, other cities that have more clouds than Seattle since January 23 include Philadelphia at 94.4%, Chicago at 95.6%, as well as Indianapolis and New York City at 97.8%.

Overall, the region has been particularly gloomy since January 23, with many cities seeing only brief glimpses – if any – of blue skies over the past 8 days.

Cloudiness also occurs in other parts of the Northeast and Midwest, while cloud levels do not meet or exceed those in Seattle.
