Biden says he traveled 'many times' over vehicle-only Francis Scott Key Bridge while commuting by train or car

President Biden said Tuesday that he traveled over the Francis Scott Key Bridge by train or car "many, many times," despite there being no rail line on the bridge.

During a news conference Tuesday on the major bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, Biden told reporters he had driven over the Francis Scott Key Bridge "many times" by train or car.

"At about 1:30 a.m. [Tuesday], a container ship struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which I have passed many times when traveling by train or car from the state of Delaware," the president said.

In a statement, a White House official said Biden was "obviously" describing driving.

"The President was apparently describing driving on the bridge while traveling between Delaware and D.C.," a White House official said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

This iconic bridge never had a railway line and has been used exclusively as a roadway since its construction in the early 1970s.

According to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), the Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977 as the final span of Interstate 695.

The 1.6-mile Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the words to the national anthem "The Star Spangled Banner," MDTA said.

In recent months, Biden has made embarrassing mistakes.

On March 8, he appeared to socialize about the office he was running for during a campaign stop at Strath Haven Middle School in Delaware County.

"Pennsylvania, I have a message for you: send me to Congress!" Biden shouted at one point, seeming to confuse the position he is running for.

In February, Biden recalled a past conversation he claimed he had spoken to late German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in 2021.

Biden said Kohl asked him what he would say if he knew 1,000 people stormed the British Parliament in an effort to prevent the next prime minister from taking office.

However, Kohl did not attend the annual meeting, as he had died four years earlier when it took place. Instead, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel was at the gathering.

Also in February, the 81-year-old president also told a Las Vegas crowd that he met French President François Mitterrand, who died 28 years ago.

In late 2022, Biden told a group of supporters that he spoke to the man who "invented" insulin.

Insulin was co-discovered by Frederick Banting and John MacLeod. Banting died in 1941, while Macleod died in 1935. Biden was born in 1942.
