Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupt Adam Schiff's victory speech, demand cease-fire in Gaza

Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted the victory speech of Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., on Tuesday after he clinched the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat.

The seat was held by former Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for more than 30 years until her death last year, after which Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Democrat Sen. LaFonza Butler to fill the vacancy.

As Schiff attempted to introduce his family at his watch party following his victory, protesters chanted "cease-fire now" and "Liberate Palestine", and as the lawmaker's comments were muffled, the chants grew louder. Have become.

At least one person was removed from the stage amid the protests.

Schiff addressed the protest after the disruption.

"We are very fortunate to live in a democracy where we all have the right to protest," he said. “We want to make sure that we maintain this type of democracy.”

The California Democrat told reporters Tuesday that he supports the Biden administration's call for a ceasefire in Gaza conditional on the release of Israeli hostages.

Schiff said, "My position is the same as the administration's, there needs to be an agreement to release the hostages and stop the fighting."

This comes five months after Hamas militants launched attacks against Israel, prompting a military response by Israeli forces. During the attack on October 7, Hamas took more than 200 people hostage.

More than 31,000 people have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas since October 7, including more than 30,000 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.

Schiff will face Republican former baseball star Steve Garvey in the general election in November.
